READING ROOM
Interior design realised in Fremantle, WA.
In the Victorian Era, the chaise lounge came into fashion as a respite for tightly corseted ladies who needed to take a breather. A ‘fainting couch’ was born.
Over time, it has become a popular piece of furniture in many households, offering a comfortable place to read, nap, or simply lounge and relax.
What is the difference between a chaise lounge and a chaise longue?
The term comes from the French ‘chaise’ meaning chair, and ‘longue’ which is the French feminine form of ‘long’.
English speakers less familiar with the French spelling often use the term ‘chaise lounge’.
This process of transforming foreign or less familiar words into something familiar is called ‘folk etymology’.
